What is it ?

Skincare industry legend Dr Nick Lowe explains: "UVA stimulates your pigment cells called Melanocytes to manufacture the pigment called Melanin. This is responsible for your tan and also your unwanted dark patches". These sun spots may take up to 10-20 years to develop, so if you notice some showing now it could have been caused when you were a child.

CAUSES & SYMPTOMS

Hyperpigmentation, age spots or melasma are common skin conditions to experience. Hyperpigmentation can occur when melanin is overproduced in certain spots on the skin and results in darkened patches on the skin. There are many types of hyperpigmentation, but the following are the most common:

Melanin overproduction which may lead to hyperpigmentation across the skin. Pigment spots such as age spots can be caused by sun exposure and therefore mainly appear on areas that are frequently exposed, such as the face, hands and arms. They tend to be small, dark patches of skin.

Melasma or chloasma can occur as a result of hormonal influences such as pregnancy and birth control pills, and causes dark and irregularly shaped areas on the face or arms.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can occur when a skin injury or trauma heals and leaves a flat area of discolouration behind. It’s commonly found among acne sufferers.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Prevention of pigmentation should ideally start at a young age. If you layer up the sunblock religiously when your skin is still youthful, it might reduce the likelihood of developing sun spots when you’re older. It’s also advisable to follow a good skincare routine to avoid inflammation and irritation. Moisturisers, lotions and creams with an SPF are essential.

It’s possible to reduce the effects of pigmentation. You may not be able to return your skin to its 20-year-old prime, but there are many modern methods that can help to improve your skin’s texture.
